In the News Presentation
This assignment is designed for students to read a recently published research article that helps them explore new research in the field of cell biology, genetics, or biotechnology. Students then present information about their article to the class. This is encouraging scientific literacy, while also shining a light to how fast scientific information is changing. These students went beyond the one article they choose to read and did their own research, finding a passion for these new discoveries that are being made.
Macromolecule Nutrition Bar Campaign
After students learned the basics of biomolecules they took their knowledge and applied it to a real world situation. Currently nutrition bars are a huge market in our country today. Students took their understanding of biomolecules and created a nutrition bar for a specific population demographic. In groups they presented and marketed their nutrition bar to the class. These two are good examples of an effective marketing campaign.
Cell Organelle Project
In order to learn about the different cell organelles and their function students produced a choice project. Students were given a list of different ways their could demonstrate their understanding of a list of animal and plant cell organelles. These students went beyond the basic requirements of the assignment and constructed projects they can be proud of.
Types of Cells Lab
Students viewed 8 different types of cells using compound microscopes. This lab was completed with the intention that students could identify that not all cells look as perfect as we draw them when study organelles. This student met all of the lab requirements by demonstrating a complete understanding of cell organelles, as well as fulfilling all of the drawing requirements.
Scientific Research Paper
Students completed a 4 week ling inquiry lab testing different variables of plant growth. Students then wrote a scientific research paper in class about their lab. Students were required to get 2 primary research articles to help explain their results. This was a challenge for students because they are reading and writing using a new type of scientific writing that they are not used to. Some students however went above and beyond expectations.
